Kamusta?

Hello everyone, I'm Paragoge and I just joined the team yesterday Kamusta? 4019512717

I'm 21 years old and from the Philippines. The topic title is "how are you?" in Filipino, which is the national language of the Philippines. I say 'national language' because we have a LOT of languages (more than a hundred), owing to the fact that the country is an archipelago. It actually kind of makes me feel awkward when I'm on the internet and a site asks me my native language, and there's no other Philippine language other than Tagalog there. (btw, Tagalog is a language that is the main contributor to the Filipino language, and sometimes people interchange them) I'm actually better with my English than with my Filipino since English is the medium of instruction in schools. If I hadn't gone to Metro Manila (the capital of the Philippines) for high school and uni, I wouldn't be able to confidently speak in Filipino, that's how bad I was. XD That's coz nobody speaks Filipino where I live, outside of Filipino class. So people know grammar and stuff, but never really get to practice conversation.

Yeah, sorry for going off on a tangent. ^^ My life isn't all that exciting, so I decided to bombard you with facts about my country instead XD

Oh, everyone here seems to be spread by all over the world... It's a good thing that anime/manga attracts so many different people.

My native language is portuguese, but there are 2 portugueses... the one from Portugal and the one from Brazil. I don't find them so different... I could even chat with a friend from Portugal some years ago and I didn't find anything weird... I even though she was from Brazil like me at first.

It depends on how you define "dialect". There are a lot of factors there, including the government; for example, the government of Japan declared the Ryuukyuuan languages as dialects though they are virtually unintelligible to those who speak Japanese. (If you've watched Prince of Tennis Nationals, the purple team that the protagonists are first up against speak a Ryuukyuuan language, specifically that of Okinawa. And it is TOTALLY different from Japanese. Seriously, I do not understand a single word they say when they speak in Okinawan x_x) But on a linguistic standpoint, they're actually different languages, not dialects. The same applies to the Chinese languages, as well as the Philippine languages.

I assume you mean Mandarin. This is like in the Philippines, where the government chooses a language (usually, if not always, this is the language of the capital) to be the standard, or the national language, to help unify the country. After all, how can the government run the country if the people can't understand them, right? So they make it mandatory to learn this official language.
